all souls day
When people in the US are busy preparing for Halloween, people in the Philippines are busy preparing for All Saint’s Day/All Souls Day or Araw ng mga Patay. It is a day to commemorate the souls of departed loved ones. Almost everyone troops to the cemetery to bring flowers and offerings. It is also doubles as a time when you see most of your extended families. On the eve of the holiday some even sleep over at the gravesite of their loved ones to start cleaning and decorating them. You also see people go to Dapitan to buy highly affordable flowers to bring to the cemetery. This is also a time for others to go on holidays, especially as aside from the actual day, the eve of the holiday is usually declared a non-working holiday as well.

There are a lot of construction going around in the neighborhood, some are single level homes, some new extension showrooms for the different dealerships in the area and some metal buildings. Some friends are thinking about purchasing their own home but are trying to decide whether they want a newly built house, an existing house or just a land first and then eventually build their own. There are those that say to go buy the land and then build as it will come out cheaper and the house will be built to your design and specifications compared to say an existing house that you need to renovate or even off the plan houses. I don’t really know what is the best way to go about it, I just hope that we’ll have the chance to own our own home in the near future.

It’s nearing Christmas time and I still haven’t done my Christmas shopping list. I guess with all the recent expenses and saving up for the trip home next year it really is hard to think of spending much this coming holiday season. Although been hearing a lot of good buys over the internet, I think that might be a good alternative have to check out the different online stores and see whether or not I can find good deals. Just a quick search showed me some like urban outfitters coupon at dropdowndeals, that might be something to check out. Argh, I need to come up with my Christmas list first.

It’s the start of term 4 for E and I still don’t feel like going back to the routine. Sometimes I feel like I’m the one going to school with the everyday drop-off and pick-up and having to supervise E’s homework routine. I think a lot of the parents especially the mums who do the drop-off/pick-up also feel that way, we all have the school break hangover. Plus it probably has something to do with being in the last quarter of the year. I definitely need to get my bearings right to be able to do what needs to be done for the rest of the year. There are some things on the to-do list that needs to be ticked that I have to get a move on.

When we first arrived here, I recall seeing an ad looking for people who wanted the greatest job in the world. A lot of people applied for the job from all over the world, seems there were a lot of interest for destination manager jobs. I think it came down to 5 people, one of whom was a local from Queensland. I forgot who finally won the job and how that eventually turned out but it did get good coverage on the news that time. I wonder it he/she is still at that job? Maybe a little googling will give me the answer.

Its really great that we have conference call services available on the various messaging applications that are out there. It surely helps all of us that are far away from our families stay connected to them. It is so fun whenever we can all do a group call, instant updates. Would be really nice to have it regularly but then it is also hard to find a good time suitable for all what with the different time zone. But yeah it is definitely a highlight whenever it happens.

It’s almost that time of the year again where we have to renew our comprehensive car insurance as well as roadside assistance. There is an offer by another company that we can look into. Their offer is if you switch your comprehensive insurance to their company, you would get roadside assistance free from the second year. Now I don’t know yet if that is a good offer as we haven’t looked into the fine print yet. Add that to the to do list before we have to renew the comprehensive.

Speaking of mobile phones. My mom is thinking of changing her current mobile phone. She’s thinking of getting a Nokia E6 which is the next generation of her current phone an E72. I told her that if she is indeed changing then better to change to an iphone or maybe a samsung galaxy s2 or an htc desire 2.2. Why bother changing phones if it have the same features as your current phone. Why not switch and enter the wonderful world of apps haha! She said she’ll think about it, me thinks I need to be more convincing hahaha!

The shift to digital tv has started a lot of the stations know broadcast digitally. There is also a campaign now where they urge you to buy tv box (or a digital set top box) for your current tv so that you can catch all the channels. You can also opt to buy a new television set if you don’t want to have to bother with set top boxes. Australia will be totally broadcasting digitally by 2013 so the need to at least buy a tv box is valid if you still want to continue watching the local channels on your current tvs.

It is amazing how technologically advanced we are now compared to say our parents’ generation or even just 20 years ago. I remember my mom having the big bulky motorola cellphone and then a few years later having the bulky nokia gsm cellphone. Compared to know where you have slim and small mobile phones with tons more features than the earlier ones. Smart phones now can even double as a barcode scanner for any of the shopping apps available. Woolies is even promoting their app this way, where you can scan the barcodes of your items at home for your shopping list. Amazing right.
